The Basic Economy catch: no carry-on on most domestic routes
United's own wording is blunt: in Basic Economy you can bring only one personal item on most flights, and carry-on bags are prohibited except on routes to South America and across the Atlantic or Pacific. Board a domestic Basic Economy fare with a roller bag and it gets checked, not binned. The exceptions that keep the full carry-on even on Basic Economy: those long-haul routes, MileagePlus Premier members, and holders of qualifying United credit cards.
This is the opposite of American's Basic Economy and Southwest's Basic fare, both of which include a full carry-on on every ticket. If you are comparing cheap fares with a roller bag in hand, United's sticker price is not the real price of traveling with that bag.
The number that actually bites: 17 x 10 x 9 under the seat
Because Basic Economy travelers live out of the personal item, United's under-seat box matters more here than at any other big carrier, and it is the strictest of the big three.
